The Manchester Burns Course offers a specially designed programme of study at Degree Level 6 and Masters Level 7.

It is delivered by experts working in burn care, who provide in-depth knowledge and experience in adult and paediatric burn injury.

The course is suitable for all multi-disciplinary professionals who work within the field of burn injury management. All study is virtual, easily allowing students to attend.

Students will participate in an interactive programme of study which combines live eLearning, self-directed study, debates, discussions and competing summative assessments.

The curriculum is designed to equip students with the underpinning knowledge and skills required to work within the field of burn injury. It has been developed with an integral link between theory, clinical practice and academia. The course, therefore, seeks to unite theory and practice and underpin this with research. It will challenge professionally held beliefs in order to encourage practitioners to improve quality of care.

The course encompasses two units of study:

The Principles and Practice of Burn Care Unit covers the patient pathway from admission to discharge and includes topics such as burns assessment, management, surgical intervention, nutrition, infection, psychology and pain control.

The Burns Rehabilitation unit covers post-acute management of the burn injured patient. This includes scar management, short and long-term psychological problems, chronic pain management, return to school/work and social reintegration.

Each unit may be accessed as a stand-alone unit or as part of the University of Manchester Masters Pathway.

Awarding institution is the University of Manchester and academic study affords 20 credits for level 6 and 15 credits for level 7.

Applicants will be qualified health care professionals with a minimum of six months experience of working in a burn care environment.

Places will be funded for all staff who meet the criteria and work within the Northern Burn Care Network area
