I have worked in Burns since 1986. During that time I have done the Burns & Plastic Surgery Course, worked in Burns Theatre and been a Sister on the Unit, I also had a short spell as a Tissue Viability nurse. In 1993, I became a Lecturer in Burns, Plastic Surgery and Tissue Viability at Manchester University and in 1997 took on the post of Lecturer Practitioner for Burns & Plastic Surgery, where I developed the Plastic Surgery Outreach Service and Complex Wound Clinics. In January 2000 I returned to Clinical Practice and worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Burns. I set up the Burns Outreach Service, which offers a holistic approach to burn care in the patients’ home, and through nurse led clinics. It caters for all aspects of burn care including wound and pain management, counselling, scar management and general rehabilitation and reintegration.
One of my passions is teaching and I am an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Chester and Manchester Metropolitan University.
In 2010 I became the first Burns Nurse Consultant in the UK, and I am currently seconded to be the Lead Nurse for the Northern Burn Care Network. During this secondment I have developed competencies for the North of England for burns services and am currently amending these for ED's and Community. I have also set up the Burns Link Nurse Framework for ED's, MIU’s and WIC's. This is going to be rolled out to Mental Health Units and Prisons this year. The main aim of the role is to develop a consistent approach to the management of burn patients.
My specific work interests are wound care, scarring, counselling, education and service development.
